Chapter 35

God’s Judgment and Promise[a]

The desert and the parched land will be glad.
    The wilderness will rejoice and blossom.
Like the crocus it will bloom with abundant flowers
    and rejoice with songs of joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
    the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.
They will behold the glory of the Lord,
    the splendor of our God.
Strengthen the hands that are weak,
    and make firm the knees that give way.

  1. Isaiah 35:1 The promises are inspired by the second part of the Book (see Isa 41:19). Jesus intends by his activity to inaugurate this period of deliverance for the poor (Mt 11:5), citing verses 5-6 of the present passage; in John 4:7, 38, he takes up the theme of the gushing waters.
